London 2012 brand protection
A large part of the budget for staging the 2012 games will come from commercial sponsorship.
In order for the organisers, London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), to attract sponsors they need to offer companies exclusive opportunities.
Parliament has granted LOCOG special legal rights which aim to prevent people creating an association with the games without authorisation.
The question of whether or not an association with London 2012 has been created in any particular case will depend on the overall impression given by the advert, marketing material or goods etc. in question.
An association with London 2012 can be created by the use of any words, images or marks, or more likely, a combination of these.
Some words have been specified in the 2006 Act which Parliament granted to protect the games. A court may take these into account when determining if an association has been created with London 2012.
You should not use any two of the words in list A, or any word in list A with one or more words in list B.

Some phrases that would be challenged legally without prior approval include:
- backing the 2012 Games
- supporting the London Games.
Events
Do not label an event or programme as being “Olympic” or “2012” or otherwise seek to create an association with the Games.
Do not link your project to the Games in any way if you have a commercial sponsor involved.
