Inside Out Project
“Supporting PE and Sport opportunities inside and outside of the curriculum for disabled people”
Background
The Inclusive PE and Sport group identified that disabled pupils are missing out on opportunities in sport and physical activity.
This is often due to
- a negative physical education and school sport experience causing drop out in physical activity, or
- a lack of sporting opportunity in the community that meets the wishes of disabled people.
It is also recognised that there is often a fundamental missing link from school to existing opportunities in the community.
An audit of all schools in Nottinghamshire LEA highlighted the need for a support service for schools including:
- training
- advice on inclusion strategies
- equipment
- links with community provision
- and most importantly a co-ordinated approach between support agencies.
The Inside Out Project
Nottinghamshire County Council , Culture & Community has funded a full time Project Officer for three years to complete the following:
- To deal with all school enquiries on issues within PE and school sport, and ensure that the appropriate support agencies go into those schools to offer immediate support.
- Assist priority schools with a whole school approach to inclusion PE and school sport through a 6-month support programme.
- Provide an adapted PE and sport curriculum that is accessible to all disabled pupils.
- Assess the individual needs of pupils
- Provide information and links to other support networks
- Provide Ambassadors of Disability Sport
- Accessible and inclusive sports equipment
- Provide a range of training opportunities
Those schools that do not require the full support programme can access elements of the Inside Out project to meet the needs of disabled pupils.
